Newspaper Reading Guide Part 1 - What to Study

1.  Print out 1 page of a Japan Times article of your choice.  It should be one page full of text (no big pictures or short articles).

2. Newspaper Vocabulary List

If a student learns all 2000 words in this vocabulary list, what percentage of the article you printed could they read?

a. Check all nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in your news article against the vocabulary list. Ignore everything else.
b. Total Words - Count all the words in the article.
c. Unlisted Words - If there is a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb in the article, but not in the list, mark the word.
d. Total Words - Unlisted Words / Total Words = % that the student can understand
e.  Read the article and write your comments.
